Both Yamaha (CRW4416S) or Plextor (PX-W4220) are dual-mode and are highly rated if you want a combined unit. But do you really want CD-RW? Do you normally re-use floppy disks?
The above are all SCSI - if you really want IDE then the Ricoh MP7040A is probably about the best (4x write). There is a faster 6x write version too - it just costs more. There is also the Yamaha CRW4416E, but this costs even more. However, CD-R media was optimised to be 2x write and this is all I ever use - just to be on the safe side.
One reason I'm not so keen on the Yammys, incidentally, is that the Disk-At-Once mode on all of them (AFAIK) doesn't work with some CD-R media, especially if the disk is more than 659 minutes. This is outside the original standard, but other manufactures can get it right.
Lots of people like Plextor - their SCSI CD-ROM drives are certainly very good (if not the best). That said, I'd avoid their CD-R drives until they are updated to support >659 minute disks. Plextor have said, officially, that this isn't supported although some people seem to get away with it some of the time.
The best software to get is Nero - by a long way.
The previous generation Plasmon CDR 480 if you can't find the older Plasmon 4240. They work, others often didn't. Who needs the aggravation?
